1.   The guidelines are set up to serve the purposes of boosting the university's internationalized development,  enhancing students' English-oriented global mobility, and encouraging the teaching staff to provide EMI curriculums.

2.    The EMI Promotion Subsidy Committee, comprised of the Dean of Academic Affairs, the Dean of International Affairs, the Director of the Language Teaching  Center, the Team Leader of the Course Affairs Division and teaching staff representatives will be officially in charge of processing and reviewing cases related to EMI promotion subsidies. Depending on the actual inquiry and claims, the convener (the Director of the Language Teaching Center) may recruit and organize a committee of experienced specialists and teacher representatives.  

3.   Any course containing EMI instruction must be noted in the course outline and posted on the university curriculum system prior to the start of the course.

4.   Target applicants: Subsidies are available for all full-time and part-time teachers who implement EMI teaching. One subsidy can be applied for by one or more teachers or teaching staff, and the maximum credit of each term is two courses (six credits).

      The subsidy is available for lecturing courses only.

       Courses set up in the Department of Foreign Languages, in-service programs, seminar courses, tutorial courses (including thesis and case studies), internship courses, service learning, classes taught by native speakers of English and courses that have been subsidized by other funds are not eligible. Cross-discipline courses taught by the Department of Foreign Languages and other departments are not regulated.

5.   Application procedure: Applicants are required to submit a completed application form and English syllabus to the faculty of the course. After review and approval by the Curriculum Committee, the dean of the department and the college, the case will be sent to the Academic Affairs Office and the International Affairs Office for final approval. The approved application will be implemented by the Language Teaching Center.

6.   The minimum number of students: The minimum number of students follows the requirements outlined in the university’s teaching hour guidelines.

7.    Subsidy Norm: Courses that receive final approval are subsidized as follows:

      (a)  Hourly pay is calculated by 1.5 times; however, overtime pay is still regulated by the university’s teaching hour guidelines.

      (b)  If the applicants choose the subsidized hourly pay, alternatively, one can apply for the allowance for teaching materials. A subsidy for of NTD 5,000 will be awarded for each course credit, up to a maximum of NTD 10,000 per course.

      (c)  Cross-college or cross-departmental courses are not eligible to receive the subsidized hourly pay; however, the teaching materials subsidy is permissible.

      (d) EMI teaching assistants are available for application. The awarding unit base of the subsidy is NTD 2,500 and can be applied as follows: The applicants will receive four months of the subsidy for each semester. The maximum monthly subsidy is Ph.D. students: 8 units; MA students: 4 units; BA students: 2 units.    

      (e) For each course, the subsided EMI TA students must not reclaim the TA funds issued by the Center of Teaching and Learning Development.    

      (f)  The actual subsidy will be determined by the EMI Promotion Subsidy Committee, based on the university's budget for the current year and is subject to change. Subsidies are prioritized below in descending order:

       • new required courses

       •  old required courses

       •  new elective courses

       •  old elective courses

8.    All subsidized applicants are categorized as EMI Seed Teachers and are obligated to attend EMI-oriented workshops, seminars and round table talks so that any related experience and tips can be widely shared. Participation and involvement will be considered as one of the criteria for further applications.

9.    Colleges and departments are required to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of their EMI teaching and to provide the Language Teaching Center with suggestions or cooperative matters for related improvements.

10.  Subsidies for EMI-related training are available for all tenure and contract-based teachers. Applicants are required to apply with valid proof of registry and payment to the Language Teaching Center and the EMI Promotion Subsidy Committee for further review. The amount of the fund is subject to the university's budget for the year.

11.  This guideline will be implemented with the approval of the Executive Meeting of the university.
